Madeleine went missing while on holiday in Portugal in May 2007

The parents of Madeleine McCann have described a police review of her case as "a huge step".

A team of Portuguese detectives is re-examining the investigation into the disappearance of the three-year-old while in Praia Da Luz in May 2007.

It follows a review by Scotland Yard officers which began last May.

Her father, Gerry McCann, from Rothley, Leicestershire, said the review had eased the pressure on him and his wife Kate.

He said: "We're 10 months into the Met's review process and it's important for us.

"It's taken pressure off us, knowing the police are actually reviewing everything. It's a huge step."

The McCanns have said they hoped the review would lead to the case being reopened.

The couple spoke prior to taking part in a 10k run in Regent's Park, in London, for the charity Missing People.

Also in attendance were Peter Lawrence, father of missing York chef Claudia Lawrence, and Rachel Elias, sister of rock star Richey Edwards who has been missing since 1995.

Kate McCann said: "It's a cause and a charity very close to our hearts. We've been able to meet people who are in similar situations.

"Although each experience is unique, we are all going through that fight and pain of not having a loved one with us."
