McCanns Play
Down New Suspect Theory |
|
|
|
The father of missing Madeleine McCann has played down reports in the Portugese
press that another English suspect is being investigated by police.
Newspapers have claimed police were looking at somebody close to Gerry and Kate
McCann as a possible suspect in the four-year-old's abduction.
The only suspect named so far is Briton Robert Murat, who lives near the
apartment in Praia da Luz where Madeleine went missing on May 3.
Mr Murat has insisted he had nothing to do with her disappearance.
In his online blog Gerry McCann said he had given interviews to the three
biggest-selling newspapers in Spain.
In the interviews, he said, he tried to stress that a lot of what was being
reported was "pure speculation".
He said: "We directed them to the official Portuguese police statements
that are very sober in comparison."
Mr McCann goes on to quote one of the statements, which was reported through
Portuguese agency Lusa.
It says the detective in charge of the case, Olegario Sousa, is not
investigating a second English suspect.
"The news that points to the existence of an English suspect, close to the
couple... 'does not come' from the PJ (the Portuguese police) and has no 'logic
whatsoever'," Mr McCann writes.
He also says he stressed to the Spanish newspapers he still believes there is a
"reasonable chance" Madeleine is alive.
:: A friend of the McCanns who was dining with them on the night Madeleine
disappeared has rejected media suggestions he may have been involved.
In a statement, Dr Russell O'Brien and his wife Jane Tanner said: "These
reports in the Portuguese press are completely untrue and extremely hurtful.
"We have spoken to the police today, and have been assured that our status
as witnesses has not changed."
