DNA sample
in restaurant sighting not Madeleine's |
|

BELGIAN
prosecutors yesterday said a DNA sample taken from a restaurant where a woman
reported seeing Madeleine McCann was not linked to the missing four-year-old.
Forensic tests revealed the DNA was that of a man, but prosecutors said they
do not prove Madeleine was not present as he may have finished the drink.
Police officers are continuing to try and trace a black Volvo used by a couple
and a youngster in the east Belgian town of Tongeren.
Spokeswoman Katja Vandoren said: "This does not mean Maddie's presence is
ruled out. The possibility exists that the bottle was finished by the man who
was with the little girl."
Ms Vandoren said that the DNA profile had been checked with Belgian and Dutch
central DNA databases, but no matches had been found.
She said that no vehicle matching the one the witness reported seeing has been
found, adding: "We continue to examine all useful tips."
The tests were carried out on a milkshake bottle left on a table outside the
restaurant close to the border between Belgium
and Holland.
The witness said the girl was with a couple - a Dutch man and an
English-speaking woman - who were acting strangely and not like "normal
parents".
There have been at least two previous reported sightings of the girl in Belgium this
summer. Other sightings have been reported in several European countries,
including the UK, as well as
Morocco.
On Saturday, Madeleine's family will mark 100 days since her disappearance from
their holiday flat in the Algarve
village of Praia da Luz on 3 May.
Madeleine's mother, Kate, said yesterday that reported sightings helped to
demonstrate that people were still looking for Madeleine.
Mrs McCann said: "It says to us that people are still looking and that is
really important and we would encourage that."
She added: "We haven't had any news to the contrary that Madeleine isn't
alive, and that's very important.
"And there have been many cases of children that have been found much
later than this so again that's reassuring. So the hope's still there."
Meanwhile, suspected traces of blood found in the Algarve
apartment where Madeleine was last seen were due to arrive in Britain
yesterday for tests.
Portuguese newspapers yesterday reported that detectives suspect the young girl
was not abducted, but died in her family's holiday flat in Praia da Luz.
Mrs McCann refused to discuss emerging details of the inquiry. |
