This
Wednesday, the Judiciary Police (PJ)
clarified that the connection between
the disappearance of Madeleine McCann
and a man who sexually abused five
little girls in the Algarve, between
2004 and 2006, matches the investigation
line that was discovered by that
police's team which was created in
Oporto, in May of 2011, to review the
case, and which was the basis for the
request to reopen the Maddie case
inquiry, in October last year.
Without commenting on the reason that
led London's Metropolitan Police to
announce this Wednesday that they are
looking for a man who sexually abused
five little girls in Portugal, in houses
that were rented by British families in
the Algarve, a PJ source stresses that
the Portuguese police "continues its
investigation with the discretion and
reserve that has been its
characteristic".
"The information that was published
today by London's Metropolitan Police
matches the investigation line that was
discovered by the PJ team led by Dr.
Helena Monteiro, which was the basis for
the request to reopen the inquiry", a PJ
source that is connected to this case's
investigation told PÚBLICO. And added:
"That investigation line was opportunely
and simultaneously presented to the
Metropolitan Police and to Madeleine
McCann's parents, during a meeting last
October, at the PJ's headquarters in
Lisbon."
The PJ source said that the similarities
between the five cases were identified
by the Porto PJ team and that, although
there were formal complaints, the
Portuguese authorities never found the
author of the sexual abuse, who may have
been linked to the disappearance of
Madeleine McCann, in May of 2007, from
an apartment that was rented by her
family at an Algarvian resort in Praia
da Luz.
Contacted by PÚBLICO, one of the
Metropolitan Police's spokesmen refused
to comment on the clarification made by
the PJ, and refused to confirm or to
deny that the British investigators were
informed about this line of
investigation by the Portuguese, months
ago.
The reason why the Scotland Yard decided
to announce, this Wednesday, that it is
looking for a sexual abuser, still
remains unexplained. |
