Madeleine
McCann: Parents could visit Portugal |
|
|
|
Kate and Gerry McCann could travel back to Portugal "of their own
accord", their spokesman said.
The parents of missing four-year-old Madeleine could fly back to see friends,
visit religious sites or to meet their Portuguese lawyers, spokesman Clarence
Mitchell said.
It would be their first visit since the couple left the country after being
given 'arguido' status - being named formal suspects - by Portuguese police
just over a month ago.
Mr Mitchell did not give any timescale on the possible visit, which could be
timed to revive interest in the search for Madeleine should it begin to flag.
He told a press briefing in London:
"They are not going back at the moment. That’s not to say they are ruling
out going back - they may even at some point go back of their own accord.
"There are social reasons, they have friends there; there are religious
reasons, they want to visit some Roman Catholic sites; and there are legal
reasons - they may go back to meet their lawyers."
The spokesman would not be drawn on whether the McCanns wanted to visit any
particular religious sites.
Three weeks after Madeleine disappeared they visited the shrine of the Virgin
Mary in Fatima, near Lisbon.
Mr Mitchell also revealed the couple’s British lawyers had flown to Portugal last
week in a bid to have their formal suspect status removed.
They flew out to meet their Portuguese counterparts to work on the matter.
The McCanns’ official spokesman also rejected newspaper reports suggesting DNA
tests had kept the couple "in the frame" for Madeleine’s
disappearance.
He said: "We cannot comment on anything that goes to the heart of the
investigation, but Kate and Gerry have nothing to hide.
"Any material that may have been found by police in Portugal can be
wholly and innocently explained."
Mr Mitchell said a campaign of TV adverts to be shown in Morocco was
"ready to roll", as was a poster campaign in Spanish supermarkets.
However, he said one Spanish supermarket chain had refused to show the
advertisements.
Asked about possible replacements for Goncarlo Amaral, who resigned as head of
the investigation last week, Mr Mitchell said he hoped the new chief would make
finding Madeleine his "first priority".
Madeleine, from Rothley in Leicestershire, went missing from her family’s
holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on May 3 while her parents dined with friends
at a bar in the complex. |
