THE fate of Madeleine McCann remained shrouded in mystery last night
after a judge ruled that her parents would not have to be questioned again.
Kate and Gerry McCann were said to be “relieved and encouraged” after detectives
were forced to admit they had no new evidence against them.
Legal sources in Portugal said a statement from the public prosecutor’s office
late yesterday meant the case was again wide open and all lines of inquiry were
being investigated.
That was understood to mean they were re-examining the possibility that the
youngster was abducted on May 3 and may still be alive.
It also means Britishexpat Robert Murat – the first official suspect and who
many thought would soon be cleared – remains a central figure in the inquiry.
