A BRIT tourist claims she spotted missing Madeleine McCann in an Indian
street market.
She was so convinced that she had a two-hour row with a couple who
insisted they were the youngster’s parents.
When other tourists spotted the blonde child’s resemblance to Madeleine
they refused to let the family leave and called police in the remote
Himalayan town of Leh.
Officers quizzed the couple and photocopied their passports.
And the Brit, known only as Carol, remains convinced the girl is
Madeleine.
She has contacted UK detectives and sent them photographs she took of
the youngster.
But last night Madeleine’s doctor parents Kate and Gerry, both 43, of
Rothley, Leics, played down the sighting.
Their spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “Kate and Gerry do not believe
the child seen in India was Madeleine.
They have seen photographic evidence and concluded that it was not her.
“We remain grateful for people’s vigilance around the world.
Madeleine is still out there and the search for her very much
continues.”
Maddie vanished from the couple’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz,
Portugal, in May 2007 days before her fourth birthday.
There has not been a positive sighting of the youngster since, despite
the publication of computer images of how she might look now.
Indian journalist Jupinderjit Singh witnessed the possible sighting in
Leh. He said: “She was a girl of six or seven with blonde hair dropping
to her shoulders.
“The girl very much resembled childhood photos of Madeleine.’’
He added that when police arrived the youngster told them the couple – a
French woman and Belgian man – were her parents.
“The little girl was hiding her face behind the French lady,’’ Mr Singh
said. “She could speak fluent French.’’
But Carol told Mr Singh she was “sure” the girl was Madeleine.
She told him: “It is almost impossible to not recognise her. We have
seen her face so many times.’’
