McCanns: 'We
Think Madeleine's Still Alive' |
|
The parents of Madeleine McCann say they are determined to keep believing she
is still alive amid reports that traces of her blood have been found in the
apartment where she went missing.
Gerry McCann said: "We're not naive, but on numerous occasions the
Portuguese police have said they are looking for Madeleine alive.
"I don't know of any information to have changed that."
When asked whether they still had faith in the investigation, Mr McCann said:
"Yes. We're very happy with the way the investigation has been
going."
Her husband added: "We would really like to thank them (the Portuguese
police). They're working incredibly hard and working very long hours."
However, the police have come under fire from experts following the case.
Stories in the local press say British sniffer dogs detected tiny spots of
blood in the Praia da Luz apartment from which Madeleine went missing just over
three months ago.
The samples are now reportedly being analysed to see whether the blood is hers.
And the probe will have to "start again from the beginning" if the
reports are true, one expert has told Sky News Online.
Throughout the investigation, police have refused to give information to the
media and are refusing to confirm or deny the reports.
But crime expert Mark Williams-Thomas said that if the blood samples were
confirmed as Madeleine's it would mean investigators would have to go back and
review every single piece of evidence.
"That apartment should have been sealed off and a thorough forensic
examination taken place in the days and weeks after she went missing," he
told Sky News Online.
"If forensics had examined thoroughly it would have taken a week to find
this 'blood'. To find it now is absolutely incredible.
"It's very sad that we've got to a stage 100 days on and we're learning
about crucial evidence we should have known about in the first few days."
He added that he had been on the scene in Praia da Luz in the week after the
abduction and noticed many flaws in the way the search was being carried out.
The former police detective said shutters should have been taken away, a
fingertip search of the area carried out and interviews done with people who
had been using the local shop. |
