The parents of Madeleine McCann have spoken "informally" to Portuguese police investigating their daughter's disappearance, Sky News has learnt.

Sky's Amanda Walker said Kate and Gerry McCann spent at least half an hour in the police station in Portimao.

The McCanns are keeping abreast of anything going on in the investigation, she said.

The family are continuing to stay in the Algarve village of Praia da Luz, from where Madeleine went missing.

Walker added that their spokesperson was keen to point out that the talks at the police station were informal rather than an interview.

This was to quash any rumours that they are suspects in the case, as some of the Portuguese press have suggested.

The McCanns have said they find such speculation hurtful and they have also found some of the press intrusion difficult as well.

The McCanns do not often attend the police station but insist that their relationship with the police is excellent and they have confidence in the investigation.

Meanwhile, Sky's correspondent said that an investigation in Belgium is still very much active, despite negative results from a DNA test.

A sample was taken from a bottle left in a restaurant where a woman reported seeing Madeleine.

The DNA proved to be from a man, but Belgian prosecutors said this does not prove Madeleine was not there.

Police officers are trying to trace a modern black Volvo used by a couple and the youngster in the east Belgian town of Tongeren.

A child therapist had said she was "100% sure" she saw the missing four-year-old at a restaurant in the town, not far from the Dutch border, on July 28.

The witness said the girl was with a couple, a Dutch man and an English-speaking woman, who were acting strangely and not like "normal parents".

Spokeswoman Katja Vandoren said: "The possibility exists that the bottle was finished by the man who was with the little girl present."
