Paddy Considine stars in The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, an adaptation of
the Kate Summerscale book and due to be shown on ITV on Monday 25 April
2011
Based
on the book of the same name by Kate Summerscale,
The Suspicions of
Mr Whicher is a one-off drama due to be shown on ITV on
Monday 25 April 2011. Starring Paddy Considine as Inspector Jonathan
Whicher, the two-hour play is based on real-life events in 1860
surrounding the murder of three-year-old Saville Kent.
Behind
the seemingly respectable middle-class façade of the Kent family,
Whicher discovers adultery, insanity and jealousy as well as gossiping
servants, a wicked stepmother and rebellious children. And he has to
battle the local police, who are working against him, as he tries to
solve the crime.
He is
also under increasing pressure to solve the crime as the case is picked
up by the national newspapers.
The death of a child stolen from his bed and thrust down into the pit
beneath a privy represented a terrifying image for the new reading
public,” said executive producer Mark Redhead in the official ITV press
release. “The case resonated for the public in 1860 in the same way that
the tragic case of
Madeleine McCann has done in recent years as parents
across the land thought there but for the grace of God.”
