Robert Murat, the chief suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, could be questioned by police next week, Sky sources have learned.

The news comes days after three friends of the McCann family were allowed to grill the British expatriate in a five-hour session.

Murat was first interviewed by police shortly after the four-year-old disappeared from her family's holiday villa in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3.

He is considered an "arguido" - the Portuguese police term for a suspect.

The 33-year-old was questioned at length by police officers again last week.

He was also quizzed by three friends of the McCanns at a Portuguese police station to see if his alibi stood up.

Fiona Payne, Russell O'Brien and Rachael Oldfield reportedly claimed they had seen Murat near the holiday villa shortly after Madeleine disappeared.

He has insisted he had an early night and had not left his mother's house.

Murat has repeatedly said that he played no part in Madeleine's disappearance.

Police sources have said the investigation into the missing four-year-old is at a "critical" stage but have not elaborated on what that means.
