Madeleine Fund Fraudster Jailed |

A woman has been jailed for three months after carrying out
a bogus door-to-door collection in the name of the Find Madeleine fund.
Bogus collections for Madeleine
Debbie Clifton, 33, conned money out of a pensioner and attempted to gain cash
from other househoulders in Cannock,
Staffordshire.
She told them the money was going towards a fund to help search for
four-year-old Madeleine, who was abducted in Portugal.
But she really wanted the cash to pay for her heroin habit, magistrates in Cannock were told.
Clifton was
caught when one resident became suspicious.
Police gathered evidence after appealing for information from anyone who had
given to door-to-door collections in Chadsmoor, Cannock.
Her victims believed the collection was part of an official fund launched by
the Find Madeleine campaign.
The fund has so far raised around £1m to help find the missing girl who
vanished on May 3.
Clifton told
the court she bitterly regretted using Madeleine's name to obtain the money and
wanted to apologise to the McCann family. |
