Madeleine's Parents Mark Tearful Milestone |
|
The mother of missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann has broken down in church
a month to the day since her daughter was abducted.
Kate and Gerry McCann were attending a service in the Algarve town where their child went
missing when the torment proved too much for her.
Mrs McCann cried after a young Portuguese girl kissed her when the congregation
in Praia de Luz were asked to exchange a sign of peace.
Clutching Madeleine's favourite toy Cuddle Cat and a copy of the children's
book We're Going on a Bear Hunt, Mrs McCann struggled to compose herself.
She wore the familiar green and yellow ribbons in her hair and was supported by
her husband throughout the hour-long service at the Igreja
Nossa Senora da Luz
The couple, both 38, then spent a second quiet day
with their two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie, taking them to a nearby beach.
For the last four weeks, Mr and Mrs McCann have been tirelessly searching for
Madeleine, criss-crossing Europe to make
appeals for help.
They have vowed to stay in Portugal
until there is "absolutely no hope" of finding her.
A statement by them to mark a calendar month since their eldest child was
snatched from her bed said: "It is incredibly difficult not having
Madeleine here.
"As every day, every week, becomes a month, we still believe she is out
there and alive and we remain positive and determined that we will find her
soon with everyone's help.
"We do realise it is just a phone call that we need. We just want her
home."
Meanwhile, it has emerged Harry Potter author JK Rowling may put bookmarks
bearing the face of Madeleine in copies of her final instalment.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and last book in the series, is due out on July 21.
Mr and Mrs McCann are midway through a series of trips around Europe to ask for
help to find their daughter, having already met the Pope and been to Spain.
They plan to fly to Berlin on Wednesday, then Amsterdam and Morocco a few days later to raise
the profile of Madeleine's case. |
