Kate McCann failed to recognise an updated picture of her missing daughter Madeleine when confronted with it on telly.

She told US chat show queen Oprah Winfrey yesterday: "The only image I have of her is before she was taken." The new picture showed Madeleine as she is believed to look now, two years after she went missing on a family holiday in Portugal at the age of three

In the likeness, her face is longer, she has shed her baby fat and wears a blue dress. Alongside it, was a picture of the smiling, roundeyed girl taken before she vanished from the British couple's holiday flat.

The pain of those two years showed as Kate and her heart-doctor husband Gerry were quizzed by Oprah in Chicago.

"Kate's anguish was there for all to see," said mum Marsha Meadows. "The look in her eyes was endless suffering." At one point Kate wept as she repeated that neither she nor Gerry had given up hope of finding Madeleine. The show is to be broadcast on May 4..
