Justice for Gonçalo Amaral took its time
but delivered. The former PJ inspector
has seen the Supreme Court of Justice
recognise his right to freedom of
expression, and thereby defend what he
has always said about the Maddie case:
the little girl died in an accident in
the apartment and the McCann couple hid
the body, simulating an abduction.
Both decisions – that of the Lisbon
Court and later that of the Supreme
Court of Justice – signify much more
than the defence of Amaral’s freedom of
expression. They give a strong boost to
the investigation of the Portimão PJ,
which was the target of political
pressure and was demonised in the media.
Ten years later, there is finally a
piece of justice in this unhappy case |
