The parents of missing Madeleine McCann have spoken in detail of the night she was kidnapped as as they prepared to fly to Germany to raise the profile of her plight.

Gerry and Kate McCann revisited the events of May 3, the night their four-year-old daughter went missing, during a direct TV appeal for help from the UK.

Mrs McCann described exactly what Madeleine had been wearing when she was snatched from their holiday apartment in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz - a pair of pink pyjamas with pictures of cartoon donkey Eeyore.

Her husband then spoke in detail about a suspect seen carrying what was thought to be a child on the night their daughter disappeared.

He said the man was approximately 35 years old, around 5ft 8in or 5ft 9in, with dark hair parted at the side and slightly longer at the back, a dark jacket slightly longer than a suit, beige trousers and dark shoes.

Both parents said they thought the sighting was significant.

"We are certainly suspicious of the timing and that person needs to be eliminated from the investigation," Mr McCann said.

"The description has been out for 10 days and as far as we know, no-one of that description has come forward so that definitely gives it more weight."

The couple's appeal will be shown on BBC1's Crimewatch programme as they try to generate publicity for their case in Berlin.

They are being flown out to the German capital in a private jet lent to them by an anonymous well-wisher before travelling on to the Netherlands.
