Madeleine McCann's father, Gerry, made
several small changes in two important
statements he gave to police in the days
after his daughter disappeared.
In episode two of
Maddie, a former US Marshal who
trains law enforcement officers to
detect deception during interviews said
the differences in Gerry McCann's two
statements could be considered by police
to be a potential "red flag".
The video in this article illustrates
how Gerry’s accounts changed when
describing the routes he said he walked
to apartment 5A on May 3, the night
Maddie vanished. |

Mr McCann's journey to the front door is
roughly twice as long as the 60 seconds
it takes to walk from the Tapas bar to
the sliding door at the back of
apartment 5A.
During a police interview on May 4, the
day after Madeleine was reported
missing, Mr McCann told police he left
the Tapas bar and walked to the front
door of 5A.
The front door was locked, Mr McCann
said, so he used his key to enter.
Inside, he found Madeleine and her
younger brother and sister, Sean and
Amelie, asleep in their bedroom, Mr
McCann told police.
Six days later, back in Portimao police
station on May 10, during a longer, more
intensive questioning session, Mr McCann
gave a different account. |
|
Mr McCann now told detectives he entered
5A through the sliding door at the back
of the apartment, which he said was
unlocked.
In this second interview, he now also
told police that the front door was
likely unlocked, not locked as he had
first stated during questioning on May
4.
Mr McCann and his wife, Kate, have
always strenuously denied any
involvement in the disappearance of
Madeleine. They have never been charged
by police. |

Jane Tanner, who was a member of the
Tapas 7, told police she saw a man
carrying a child away from the direction
of the McCann's apartment.
If Ms Tanner had spotted an abductor,
given the location of her sighting, the
man would have almost certainly had to
take Maddie out an unlocked front door.

Portuguese detectives harboured
suspicions it was possible that someone
might have faked Madeleine McCann's
abduction. |
